Writing is an expression of one’s self.

Writing is an expression of one’s self.  Writing a story, in this case, fiction, is limited only by one’s imagination.  I find it relaxing, putting pen to paper, or more accurately, fingers to the keyboard and letting my mind form characters, names, places, and events.  But it’s more than an act of journaling – a day in the life of.  It’s about building.  One minor event leads to another until there is a climax, a tipping point that changes the characters.

The story takes shape through the events within the storyline.  The buildup of these events is what’s truly exciting.  What happens next keeps the reader engaged.  The escalation of events helps shape, form, and change the characters in the story.

Overcoming obstacles and solving problems as relationships grow and evolve will eventually reach the much-needed happy ending we all want and strive for.

Writing is much like designing crochet patterns, for me, personally.  I need to be in the right frame of mind and have an idea of the story or design I want.  The process is figuring out how to get to that end, which events or stitches are needed to achieve that goal.

When life happens, and I don’t have time to write, a storyline can sag, and along with it, my enthusiasm.  To get back into the groove, I need to recap what’s been written so I can add onto the rest of the story.   And there is so much to keep track of!

In writing my current book, the meet-cute is unexpected, and an attraction develops almost immediately.  The problem is, he’s engaged, and she’s still getting over a divorce while navigating an unknown future.

She’s hired to renovate his home for the happy couple to move into after they marry.  And that’s when things start to turn awkward in more ways than one.  Being thrown together throughout the three-month renovation proves too much; the attraction grows, feelings deepen, and before long, they fall in love.  What happens between is where the fun is!

And that is where I am now, in the final editing process.  Sometimes I wonder if I will ever finish because there’s always room for changing this, or adding that, or fixing this.  Sometimes, it’s a need to get out and breathe in some much-needed fresh air, or a good dream with fresh ideas, to where I can’t wait to open the manuscript while the ideas are still fresh in my mind.

Inspiration can come in many forms – like a beautiful evening sky – both photos above were taken a day apart.
