ScarecrowHead: (Using Aran)

• Row 1) Starting at top of head: ch 4, (6 dc) in 4^th ch from hook (first 3 chs skipped count as first dc): 7 dc. 
• Row 2) Ch 3, turn work; dc in first st, dc in next 5 dc, (2 dc) in last dc: 9 dc.
• Row 3) Ch 2, turn work; dc in next dc (counts as first dec over first 2 sts), dc in next 5 dc, dc dec over last 2 sts seespecial sts: 7 dc.
• Row 4) Ch 2, turn work; dc dec over next 2 dc (counts as first dec over first 3 sts), dc in next dc, dc dec over last 3 sts: 3 dc. Fasten off; secure ends.  Mark last row as WS of work.

Scarecrow Arms: (Using maize)

• Row 1) Ch 20; with scarecrow head WS facing, sl st in first st on last row (row 4), sl st in next 2 sts on head, ch 21; sc in 2^nd ch from hook, sc in next 19 ch, sc in next 3 sts on head (working over sl sts), sc in next 20 ch: 23 sc.
• Rows 2-3) Ch 1, turn work; sc in ea sc across: 23 sc. Fasten off; secure ends on last row.

Scarecrow Body: (Using maize)

• Row 1) With scarecrow RS facing, sk first 17 sc on last row of arms and join yarn to next sc with a sl st; ch 1, sc in joining, sc in next 8 sc: 9 sc.
• Rows 2-9) Ch 1, turn work; sc in first sc; sc in next 8 sc: 9 sc.  Fasten off; secure ends after last row. 

Scarecrow Pants: (Using dk blue)

• Row 1) (Working in back lps this row only); with RS facing, join yarn to back lp of first st on last row of body with a sl st; ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in joining, dc in next 7 sc, (2 dc) in last sc: 11 dc. 
• Row 2) Ch 3, turn work; dc in next 2 dc, (3 dc) in next 2 dc, dc in next dc, (3 dc) in next 2 dc (creating buttocks inc), dc in last 3 dc: 19 dc. 
• Row 3) Ch 3, turn work; dc in next 2 dc, (dc dec over next 3 dc) twice, dc in next dc,(dc dec over next 3 dc) twice (creating buttocks dec), dc in last 3 dc: 11 dc. 
• Row 4) Working on first pant leg only: ch 3, turn work; dc in next 5 dc leaving rem dc unworked for opposite pant leg: 6 dc.
• Rows 5-7) Ch 3, turn work; dc in next 5 dc: 6 dc.
• Row 8) Ch 3, turn work; dc in next dc, dc dec over next 2 dc, dc in last 2 dc: 5 dc.
• Rows 9-13) Ch 3, turn work; dc in next 4 dc: 5 dc. Fasten off; secure ends after last row. 

Opposite Pant Leg: (Using dk blue)

• Row 4) With WS facing, join yarn to same dc where last dc on row 4 is worked with a sl st (at center); ch 3, dc in next 5 dc: 6 dc. 
• Rows 5-13) Rep rows 5-13 for first pant leg

Belt: (Using lt brown or tan)

• Row 1) Ch 6; join with a sl st to waist of scarecrow, ch 9, sl st in opposite side of waist on scarecrow; ch 1, turn work, sl st in ea ch across, ch 9.  Fasten off, leaving a 1 1/2" length.  Tie belt at waist and fray the ends of the yarn. 

Patches: (Using gold, carrot & gray) (Make one in ea color)

• Row 1) Ch 4; sc in 2^nd ch from hook and in ea ch across: 3 sc.
• Rows 2-3) Ch1, turn work; sc in first sc, sc in next 2 sc: 3 sc.  Fasten off; secure ends.

Finishing:

Making Straw Lengths: (Using lt brown or tan)

• Cut two lengths of yarn and holding the lengths together, fold in half.  Working from the RS of the project, pull the fold through to the WS.  Pull loose ends through the fold and cinch down. 

Placing Straw Ends:

• Legs:  Add straw to first, center, and last dc on last row of pant legs for each pant leg. 
• Arms Add straw to the ends of arms between 1st and 2nd row, and again bet 2nd and 3rd row for each arm. 
• Head: Add straw to head where desired; the model uses two on each side of the head.  More or less can be added as desired. 
• Finishing the Ends: Fray ends of straw by pulling the yarn fibers apart and then trim lengths as desired. 
• For Pokey: Cut the 12" L dowel in half.  Glue the long dowel (24" L) to WS of scarecrow down the center of his back allowing the dowel to extend beyond the length needed for inserting into a plant.  Glue the other dowel pieces to arms, butting one end of both dowels against the center dowel to stabilize the arms.  Otherwise the arms will hang instead of extend out to either side.  Glue dowels in place.    
• With scarecrow RS facing, position straw hat on head and glue in place.  Glue patches to the pants and shirt using the photo for guidance.
• For Fridgie:  Attach magnets to WS of scarecrow where needed to hold to a magnetic surface securely.
