DIY Mock Carnation Heart Wreath

Valentine’s is synonymous with hearts.  You see hearts everywhere, from heart-shaped boxes of chocolates at the store to crafts of all kinds.  We love hearts!

For Valentine’s Day, I wanted to craft a heart from something I could reuse or repurpose and, at the same time, create a Valentine’s Day decoration.  And then it hit me; I could use those coffee filters that have been lying around since we bought a Keurig.

Rather than throwing out those unused coffee filters, make a heart wreath out of them instead.  In this case, a mock carnation heart wreath!   Here’s what you need!

Make a carnation wreath for Valentine's using coffee filters, permanent ink markers, and a Styrofoam wreath base!

Materials

  • Styrofoam heart wreath (any size)
  • Pinking shears
  • Permanent ink marker (pink)
  • Steel crochet hook or similar object
  • Coffee filters
  • Glue – glue gun optional

Instructions

  • Working with 3-4 coffee filters at a time, fold the group in half, then fold in half again, and finally fold that in half again. Using pinking shears, cut approximately 1 ½” to 2” down from the edge, cutting across the top. This doesn’t have to be exact, nor does your cut. Clip straight across, arch the cut, or an S-shape type of cut. They all work, and it’s probably more important to vary them so they aren’t exactly alike.
  • Open the filters and remove one for a plain white flower. Using a permanent ink marker, color in the top filter with the bottom filters underneath. Again, no artistic ability needed. Color as shown; dot the filters, or just plain scribble. A variety is best for this project.
  • Using the blunt end of a steel crochet hook or similar object, place it in the middle of one filter. Fold the filter in half over the hook, then fold it in half again as shown. Now twist the ends around the hook so that when you puncture a hole in the Styrofoam, the filter will push into the hole. Slide the hook out and hold the filter in place as you pull the hook out. Now, using your fingers, pull the edges apart.
  • If desired, you can dab the ends of the filter points with glue or dribble some in a premade hole in the foam heart wreath. Work systematically in filling the wreath. Fill in one area before proceeding to the next to avoid crushing previous “flowers” as you work.
