Decorating with Christmas Cards

Don’t underestimate the joy of decorating with Christmas cards.   If you’re like me, you save those cards as they come in the mail.  I’ve saved mine for well over 30 years.  At first, I only kept a select few, those I thought especially pretty or meaningful, but I also kept those from family and friends that included a meaningful note inside. 

If you haven’t started saving those precious Christmas cards, it’s never too late.  Of course, fewer people send them now because of the expense, and it’s easier to text or call.  However, if you still have boxed cards from previous years, include some of those in your decorating theme. 

Placing a couple of cards on an end table or entry table always feels festive.   

When we had our hutch, I staged a variety of Christmas cards on it every year.  It was my go-to decorating in the dining room.    

Hanging cards over a mirror or art is another great way to bring a bit of Christmas nostalgia.

My “ladder” picture holder was transformed into a card holder by simply hanging Christmas cards over each photo. 

Another festive touch I used last year and this year was to tape a few cards to the glass panes on the French doors into my office.   

Here, I arranged Christmas cards along the pony wall in our loft upstairs. 

I like to coordinate colors to suit the rest of my Christmas decorations.  For instance, upstairs, the Christmas tree is decked in red, white, and green.  I chose the prettiest green and red Christmas cards to coordinate.  Downstairs, the tree is trimmed in white, gold, and silver with splashes of red (cranberries).  I used more subdued Christmas cards with a few highlighting those colors with a splash of red. 

Crafting with cards is another great way to decorate your home.   Here are a few ideas:

• Using just the card face, punch holes around the edges and crochet around the card. 
• Cut out the main figures to create unique ornaments to hang from the tree. 
• Cut out the main figures to create gift tags.
• Make festive bookmarks.
• Cut strips and make chain garlands.

There are plenty of ways to use old Christmas cards!
